Its karnevalzeit in Germany – that one time in the year when people go just absolutely mad and just about anything goes! Well, I for one went to work with long dreadlocks and blood on my shirt! The carnival began on 3rd Feb, the Thursday and it goes on till Wednesday.
Thursday is traditionally the women’s carnival. I celebrated this at Cologne with some of my colleagues – and it was awesome. I know I am supposed to be a loyal Duesseldorfer, but this is one time in the year I am gonna admit that I love Koelsch more and that the Cologne version of the carnival is slightly more vibrant.
The Thursday carnival is followed by Carnation Saturday, Tulip Sunday, Rose Monday, Violet Tuesday and finally Ash Wednesday. Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) is the highlight of the karnevalzeit (carnival time) and guess what! the main parade went by my home! and thus I had front row seats to one of the most crowded events.
