Nice post Surya.. we were there this summer too..another nice place to go to (near vienna and easily accessible from vienna) is Seegrotte.. It is an underground mine with the largest underground lake in Europe, which was used by the German soldiers during the second World War.. Worth a visit..

Nice post, Surya. Brought back memories of my stay there, particularly the 'Mallu' comment by Pramod.

I visited Vienna in '99 towards the end of my European backpacking journey. Was totally homesick by then. First time that I was travelling on my own. Happened to see an Indian store and walked in, and was pleasantly surprised to hear Malayalam being spoken. Pramod is right, there are many Malayalees there...i was amazed! The shopkeeper told me that many of them are nurses, living on their own and sending money back to India to their families.

I was only too happy to hear them speak Malayalam...made me feel a little less home sick. i tried hard in my "toota-foota" Malayalam to explain that my dad is from Kerala. The shopkeeper was genuinely happy to hear that and asked me to visit his shop again if I had time. Unfortunately, I was heading back home in a couple of days after that, so never went back to that store. But I cherish the memory of that visit.

This is beautiful piece. Never got to see Vienna in one piece like you guys have (numerous visits, mostly business, so I can tell you more details about the Airport than anything else!)- so I enjoyed your writing - and looking forward to the 2 more in the series.

Did you know that there is a huge mallu population in Vienna? As much as whole of Switzerland put together!
