Feeling trapped…by Google

Posted on April 28, 2005June 30, 2005 by Surya

Everyone seems to luuurrve Google – maybe rightfully so. While I still use google as my primary search engine, I don’t particularly like the fact that they also know who I keep in touch with (gmail), what news I read (google news), who my friends are (orkut), what I research on (google scholar), what I like to buy (froogle) and so on and on..its beginning to freak me out..

And as if it wasn’t enough, heres what they say about google gulp:

Think a DNA scanner embedded in the lip of your bottle reading all 3 gigabytes of your base pair genetic data in a fraction of a second, fine-tuning your individual hormonal cocktail in real time using our patented Auto-Drink™ technology, and slamming a truckload of electrolytic neurotransmitter smart-drug stimulants past the blood-brain barrier to achieve maximum optimization of your soon-to-be-grateful cerebral cortex.

Anyone tried reading their FAQs? Whoa – are they now trying to make me confused too?

Update:
To add to my paranoia, just came across an article in Fortune’s May issue titled “Living in a Google world“.(might need a subscription) – It concludes with: “Will consumers be willing to swap one monopoly for another? Does Google deserve the trust that Microsoft has squandered?”.

Even if Google gets me to trust their good nature, I hope they start hiring as good security people as they seem to be hiring OS Gurus.

Well, it was their April fool joke this year :-) But their FAQ takes digs at people who criticize their ‘forever beta’ products etc…

Ya, figured it must be a joke..
but looking at the way things are going – i think if they could do it, they would..its obviously in someone’s thoughts.

One could get paranoid about everything – but until now Google has been ‘good’ about everything they have ventured into. Of course, the fact remains that Google is growing, but we are no longer living in a socialist utopia where corporations cannot grow – If they are growing, well and good.. if they become evil, someone will come along to unseat them. Until then, let’s enjoy the ride and enjoy all the good stuff that Google does.

Everyone has a potential to become evil.. everyone… paranoia isn’t funny to live with :-))))
